How is the African e-bike adapted to the special conditions in Africa?

The e-bike has reinforced frames, thicker spokes, FatTires and a sturdy luggage rack that can carry up to 100kg of load. Except for the motor, all parts can be repaired with local spare parts. You can find all technical details in the following document:

Technical info on the African e-bike

How are the bikes used and who determines their use?

The local partner organizations (in Uganda FABIO, in Namibia EBIKESFORAFRICA/ BEN) are responsible for selecting the recipients of the e-bikes. This is usually done by prioritizing those users who have the most urgent needs. In general, anyone interested can apply for an e-bike at FABIO.

How long/far does a battery charge last?

A full battery lasts for about 50 km at medium speed, normal terrain and medium load. Experience from the test phase with the first e-bikes in Uganda has shown that this charge lasts for about 2 days until the battery needs to be recharged.

What happens to the batteries when they no longer work?

Defective or old batteries can be returned to the local partner organisations, which will recycle them. A message is sent via the built-in GPS tracker when the battery is no longer functional.

Is it possible to ride the e-bike without the motor and battery if they no longer work?

Yes, the motor can be replaced by locally available hubs. The bike can then be ridden quite lightly without the battery and electronic parts, ensuring a long service life.

Is the e-bike adapted to the needs of women?

The frame ergonomics are designed in such a way that women can also saddle up without any problems. The frame height is also relatively low and can be adjusted with an adjustable saddle.

How will they be used and who will decide on their use ?

The local partner organisations (in Uganda FABIO, in Namibia EBIKESFORAFRICA/ BEN) take over the selection of the recipients of the E-bikes. This is usually done by prioritising those users who have the most urgent need. In general, all interested people can apply for an EBike at FABIO.

How does the cooperation with the local partner NGOs in Africa work? How does the cooperation with the local partner NGOs in Africa work?

All AfricanE-Bike projects are cooperations on an equal footing with the partners in the South. They define the needs and set the framework for the cooperation. A so-called Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is agreed with all partners, in which rights and obligations for EURIST and the NGO are agreed.

When will the donor-funded bicycles be delivered?

To minimise transport costs, the e-bikes are shipped in containers from the production site in India to Africa. This amounts to about 100 bikes per container. As soon as 100 e-bikes are financed, they are ordered, produced and delivered.

Where does the electricity come from to charge the bikes?

Many countries in Africa have high shares of cleanly produced electricity, such as Uganda, where the electricity grid is almost exclusively fed by hydroelectric power plants. In regions that do not have access to clean electricity, solar panels are installed.

Is the African E-Bike accompanied by a solar package?

No. Depending on the specific location, a decision is made on the installation and the size of the solar panels to be installed. If, for example, solar panels already exist and their capacities are not yet fully utilised, they can be used if necessary.

How does GPS tracking work?

The e-bike can be located anywhere via satellite using the so-called Geo Positioning System (GPS). For this purpose, a SIM card is built into the GPS tracker on the e-bike, which guarantees this function at all times via the networks of the national telephone companies. The data obtained by GPS is evaluated to optimise the construction, use and allocation of the e-bikes.

How are the bikes secured against theft?

The e-bike can be located anywhere via satellite using the so-called Geo Positioning System (GPS). A warning function not only sends an immediate signal to the owner in the event of an attempted theft, but also demobilises the battery function so that use of the e-motor is suspended. Recovery can only take place via a code. In addition, a shrill loud tone sounds in the event of a theft attempt.

Is it possible to use it in cities or only in the countryside?

As long as road safety and topography do not stand in the way, the e-bike can be used anywhere – whether as a commuter bike in urban areas or as a cargo bike in rural areas. Through lobbying, all partner NGOs of AfricanEBike try to sensitise transport policy and planning for a safe bicycle infrastructure, especially in cities.
